UPI was introduced in January 2016 and initially only a few banks adopted it, but later after realizing its potential, many banks tied up with NPCI to offer UPI services to their customers and many banks launched their own versions of the UPI app. . Today, every bank has a UPI app and likewise there are many payment apps that allow you to make simple, easy and fast transactions using the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) like Google Pay. According to NPCI reports, as of February 2019, 134 banks were using UPI and around 300 billion were transferred through UPI in that month.
Benefits of UPI:
It offers a safe, secure, easy and fast way to transfer money, pay bills, pay for purchases and more. It allows you to transfer money directly from your bank account directly to the person’s bank account
Transactions through UPI do not require the user to enter bank details and other sensitive information every time they initiate a transaction.
Just like your email ID, you get a UPI ID after registering with the payment app. This ID can be taken as a financial address that allows you to transfer and receive funds instantly throughout the day, even on weekends or holidays. Just like your bank account is unique to each person, no two or more individuals can have the same UPI. You can connect all your bank accounts with one application.
How UPI works / How to use UPI:
Download your bank’s UPI app from Play Store. Open the application and follow the instructions one by one, such as entering your name, address, email address, bank details and other information. You will be asked to verify your phone number, which is associated with your bank account. This number should be active and its SIM card should be in the phone you are using to register. You are also required to set your login password, virtual address and m-pin during the registration process. So sending money through UPI involves two-step verification; first login password, then m pin.
After completing the registration for UPI, you can open the app using the login password you set. You will need recipient’s UPI i.d (virtual id) to send money and you need to use your m-pin to complete this transaction. This app also allows you to send money even if you don’t have the recipient’s UPI ID, you will need the recipient’s bank account details like bank name, account number and ifsc code.
